Learning how to do meditation at home is personal journey. When you’re figuring out how to meditate at home it can be confusing. One tip that used to bug me was the whole “don’t lie down” while you meditate advice. Out of all the ways to meditate at home, I found lying down always worked best for me. But then I worried that this wasn’t meditating “properly”. Spare yourself the anxiety when it comes to how you can mediate at home and just do what works for you!
These tips are not “musts” on how to do meditation at home. But they are the home meditation techniques that have worked best for me as a beginner. There are so many ways to learn how you can meditate at home, these are more general ways to go about it as a beginner.
Try and choose the same space every time
I find one of the best ways to meditate at home is to try and meditate in the same space every time. For me, that’s always my room. I find when I close my door it’s a message for everyone not to knock or disturb me unless it’s urgent!
Try and find a place where your family know it’s a no go zone! If you can’t use the exact same space, maybe create a sign for the space your in. I always think of a door sign like at hotels. That way whichever room you decide to use, you can leave a sign to say you’re mediating so they know it’s your time for yourself. Out of all the home meditation techniques, this one has to be the most important for how to meditate at home. If someone is coming in and out of the room, or constantly calling you, meditation can be almost near impossible!

Decide HOW you want to meditate (and don’t be afraid to lie down)
This point goes back to the whole “don’t lie down”. When it comes to how to do meditation at home, the best way is to find home mediation techniques that work for you. While it’s always good to listen to advice, if someone is telling you how you can meditate at home and it’s not working for you, don’t do it!
My last point for this section is to decide HOW you want to meditate before you start your session. With all the ways to meditate at home, it’s best to try and organize how you’re going to approach it before you start. Do you prefer to sit? Do you need a cushion to sit? Or are you lying down? If so, maybe you need a blanket to keep you warm.
These are things to think about when it comes to how to do meditation at home. It helps you create the most comfortable space upfront so you can get straight into it. I’ve been there where I’ve started and decided it was too cold so I had to interrupt it and get a blanket!

Try to set the same time/s every day
The next tip on the list of ways to meditate at home is to try and choose the same time/s every day to meditate. This can be a hard one especially with kids in the picture. But it’s worth it to wake up 5-10 minutes earlier or cut 5-10 minutes of late night TV to get your meditation in at the same time every day. It helps us to stay commited and consistent.
When we try to fit it in wherever, it can fall of the radar completely. Even if you can only get 5 minutes in everyday. As long as it’s the same time, it’s creating a habit for yourself.

Remove all distractions (your phone – put it on flight mode with the wifi on)
And we’re back to the distractions talk… how you can meditate at home if you’re phone’s always notifying you of something else happening! The temptation to check those notifications is too strong! So the best way for us to stay focused is to get rid of it completely.
Part of my home meditation techniques is to put my phone on flight mode. If this is too much for you, try putting it on vibrate. Or turn off your WiFi so people can still call you but Facebook messenger or other apps aren’t distracting you.

Choose 1 type of meditation to try first (don’t be afraid to try different types of meditation)
When you’re figuring out how to do meditation at home don’t be afraid to try different home meditation techniques until you find what works for you.
There are countless ways to meditate at home. Some you’ll love and some you won’t. So while you’re figuring out the best ways to meditate at home, don’t be afraid to chop and change to see what works.
One tip I will give though is to decide this BEFORE you get into your meditation session. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve scrolled through YouTube to find a meditation and found myself there for over 20 minutes!!
Some ways to meditate at home (YouTube will be your best friend) is:
- Sound meditation
- Guided meditation (my favorite so far)
- Transcendal meditation
- Breathing meditation (where you focus on the in and out sensations of the breath)
Again, these are just ideas. The best home meditation techniques are the ones where you leave feeling they’ve worked for you. Meditation is a very personal thing. It’s different for everyone and there’s definitely no one way to go about it.
